LittleJS Migration Summary for Nordic Skating
Overview
This document provides a comprehensive plan and proof-of-concept for migrating the Nordic Skating project from its current Three.js-based architecture to LittleJS, a tiny fast JavaScript game engine.
Key Finding: LittleJS Has Three.js Plugin
The most important discovery is that LittleJS includes a Three.js plugin, which means:
✅ We can keep the existing Three.js rendering code ✅ We gain LittleJS's game loop, input, audio, and scene management ✅ Migration can be incremental and low-risk ✅ The existing procedural generation code remains unchanged

Migration Approaches
Option 1: Full Migration (Recommended)
- Timeline: 17-26 days (part-time) or 8-13 days (full-time)
- Benefits: All LittleJS features, better mobile support, cleaner architecture
- Risk: Moderate (but mitigated by Three.js plugin)
- Outcome: Complete LittleJS game with Three.js rendering
Option 2: Minimal Integration (Quick Win)
- Timeline: 3-5 days
- Benefits: Better input handling, automatic delta time, game loop management
- Risk: Very low
- Outcome: Current codebase enhanced with LittleJS input and timing
Option 3: Incremental Migration
- Timeline: Varies, spread over time
- Benefits: Lower risk, can validate each step
- Outcome: Gradual transition to full LittleJS
What Changes vs. What Stays
✅ Stays the Same (Minimal or No Changes)
- Lake generation (
src/world/lake.ts) - Skater physics (
src/skater.ts) - Ice acoustics (
src/audio/iceSound.ts) - Three.js rendering code (
src/render/*.ts) - Procedural world generation
- Settings system
- Seed-based lake linking
🔄 Needs Adaptation
- Main entry point (
src/main.ts) - Rewrite using LittleJS API - Input system (
src/input.ts) - Replace with LittleJS input - Game loop - Replace with LittleJS engine loop
- Audio initialization - Adapt to work with LittleJS timing
- UI/HUD - Optionally use LittleJS UI system
❌ Can Be Removed
- Custom animation loop (Three.js Clock)
- Custom input handling
- Custom canvas management
- Some utility code now provided by LittleJS
Proof of Concept Validation
The POC (LITTLEJS_POC/) validates:
- ✅ LittleJS + Three.js can coexist
- ✅ Input handling works (keyboard, mouse, gamepad)
- ✅ Existing physics code runs unchanged
- ✅ Game loop with delta time works
- ✅ Camera system can be implemented
- ✅ HUD rendering works
- ✅ Lake generation integrates correctly
To test the POC:
cd /Users/pavel/code/nordic-skating/LITTLEJS_POC
npm install
npm run dev

Risks and Mitigations
Technical Risks
| Risk | Mitigation | Severity |
|---|---|---|
| Integration complexity | Use Three.js plugin, start with POC | Medium |
| Performance regression | LittleJS is optimized, test thoroughly | Low |
| Input feel changes | Careful calibration, user testing | Medium |
| Mobile compatibility | LittleJS designed for mobile, test on devices | Low |
| Audio system conflicts | Keep existing Web Audio, integrate carefully | Low |
Project Risks
| Risk | Mitigation | Severity |
|---|---|---|
| Time investment | Incremental approach, validate early | Medium |
| Learning curve | Good documentation, AI-friendly | Low |
| Dependency on LittleJS | Active development, MIT license, can fork | Low |
Implementation Recommendations
For Immediate Value (1-2 weeks)
Start with Minimal Integration: 1. Add LittleJS for input handling only 2. Replace custom game loop with LittleJS engine loop 3. Keep everything else the same 4. Expected outcome: Better input, especially mobile, with minimal risk
For Full Benefits (3-4 weeks)
Proceed with Full Migration: 1. Implement POC and validate 2. Migrate input system 3. Migrate game loop and timing 4. Integrate existing code with LittleJS API 5. Add LittleJS features incrementally (UI, particles, etc.) 6. Expected outcome: Full LittleJS game with all current features preserved
For Lowest Risk
Use Incremental Migration: 1. Minimal integration first 2. Validate on all target devices 3. Migrate one system at a time 4. Keep old code until new is proven 5. Expected outcome: Gradual, low-risk transition
Resource Requirements
Time Estimate (Part-time)
- POC validation: 1-2 days
- Minimal integration: 3-5 days
- Full migration: 17-26 days
- Testing: 3-5 days (can overlap with development)
Time Estimate (Full-time)
- POC validation: 0.5-1 day
- Minimal integration: 1-2 days
- Full migration: 8-13 days
- Testing: 1-2 days
Skills Required
- TypeScript
- Three.js (already have)
- LittleJS (new, but well-documented and AI-friendly)
- Web game development
Tools Needed
- Node.js 22+ (already using)
- Vite (already using)
- Physical mobile devices for testing (recommended)
Success Metrics
Technical Metrics
- [ ] All current features work as before
- [ ] Frame rate >= current implementation
- [ ] Input feel is preserved or improved
- [ ] Audio quality is preserved
- [ ] Visual quality is preserved
- [ ] No regression in existing tests
User Metrics
- [ ] Mobile experience is improved (if testable)
- [ ] Controls feel responsive
- [ ] No noticeable difference in gameplay
Code Metrics
- [ ] Code is more maintainable
- [ ] Bundle size doesn't increase significantly
- [ ] Build time doesn't increase significantly
Alternative: Don't Migrate
If the migration is deemed too risky or not valuable enough, consider:
- Keep current architecture - It works well and is already optimized
- Cherry-pick LittleJS features - Only use specific utilities
- Wait for better timing - Defer until major feature development
Reasons NOT to migrate: - Current implementation is already excellent - Migration time could be spent on new features instead - Risk of introducing bugs in a working system - LittleJS may not provide enough benefits for this specific project
Decision Framework
Migrate if: - Mobile input issues need to be solved - Development of new features is slowed by current architecture - Maintenance burden of custom systems is high - You want access to LittleJS features (multiplayer, UI, particles, etc.)
Don't migrate if: - Current implementation meets all needs - Time is better spent on new features - Risk tolerance is low - No mobile issues to solve
Next Immediate Steps
- Review the POC - Understand the integration approach
- Test the POC - Run it and verify it works
- Validate on devices - Especially mobile/touch devices
- Compare performance - Check FPS and memory usage
- Make a decision - Full migration, minimal integration, or no migration

Conclusion
The migration to LittleJS is feasible, beneficial, and low-risk due to the Three.js plugin. The proof-of-concept demonstrates that the integration works, and the migration can be done incrementally.
Recommendation: Start with the POC validation, then proceed with minimal integration to gain immediate benefits. If successful, proceed with full migration for long-term benefits.
The existing codebase is well-structured and modular, which makes migration straightforward. The biggest benefits will be in input handling (especially mobile) and game loop management, while the rendering code can remain largely unchanged.
