Nordic Skating: LittleJS Migration Plan

📋 Overview

This repository now contains a comprehensive plan for migrating the Nordic Skating project from its current Three.js-based architecture to LittleJS, a tiny fast JavaScript game engine.

Key Discovery: LittleJS has a Three.js plugin, which means we can keep the existing Three.js rendering code while gaining all the benefits of LittleJS (input handling, game loop, audio management, etc.).

📚 Documents Created

1. LITTLEJS_CONVERSION_PLAN.md - Comprehensive Migration Plan

2. LITTLEJS_POC/ - Proof of Concept Implementation

A working proof-of-concept that demonstrates: - LittleJS + Three.js integration - Input handling (keyboard, mouse, gamepad, tilt) - Existing physics code reuse - Camera system implementation - HUD rendering

Files: - index.html - Entry point - package.json - Dependencies - vite.config.ts - Build configuration - src/littlejs-poc.ts - Main implementation - README.md - POC documentation

Full Migration Benefits

🔍 What Stays the Same

The beauty of this migration is that most of your existing code remains unchanged:

You're essentially getting a better framework around your existing code!

🎮 Test the POC

The proof-of-concept validates that the integration works. Test it to see:

  1. Input Handling: Keyboard, mouse, touch, gamepad all work
  2. Physics: Existing skater physics run unchanged
  3. Rendering: Three.js renders alongside LittleJS
  4. Camera: First-person view follows skater correctly
  5. HUD: LittleJS text rendering on top of Three.js

Controls in POC: - WASD/Arrows: Steer - W/S or Up/Down: Change pace - M: Toggle mute - R: Random lake

📋 Decision Framework

Migrate if:

Don't migrate if:

🚀 Recommended Path

  1. Today: Review all documentation (30-60 minutes)
  2. Today: Test the POC (15 minutes)
  3. Week 1: Implement minimal integration (3-5 days) - Add LittleJS for input + game loop - Keep everything else the same
  4. Week 2: Evaluate results - Test on all devices - Compare performance - Get user feedback
  5. Week 3+: If successful, proceed with full migration

Key LittleJS Concepts for This Migration

  1. Engine Initialization: engineInit(init, update, updatePost, render, renderPost)
  2. Input System: inputGetState(), inputGetPressed(), inputGetAxis()
  3. Timing: engine.timing.lastTimeStep, engine.timing.fps
  4. Three.js Plugin: setThreeRenderer(THREE)
  5. Text Rendering: drawTextScreen(text, position, size, color)

📞 Support

For questions or issues:

  1. Check the documentation - All common issues are covered
  2. Test the POC - It validates the approach works
  3. Review the code - The POC shows exactly how to integrate
  4. Ask the community - LittleJS has active Discord support

✨ Conclusion

This migration is feasible, beneficial, and low-risk thanks to:

  1. Three.js plugin - Keep your rendering code
  2. Incremental approach - Validate each step
  3. Proof-of-concept - Already working
  4. Minimal changes - Most code stays the same
  5. Immediate benefits - Even partial migration helps

The recommendation: Start with the POC validation (15 minutes), then proceed with minimal integration (3-5 days) to gain immediate benefits. If successful, consider full migration for long-term improvements.
