288 "usedBy": "the Māori people",
289 "description": "The maramataka ('the moon turning') reckons time by lunar months of about 29.5 nights, each tracked by name and associated with favorability for planting, fishing, and hunting; some tribes added an occasional 13th month to keep the roughly 12-month lunar year aligned with the seasons. Tribal traditions vary on whether the lunar month starts at the new moon (Whiro) or full moon (Rākaunui). The year traditionally began with the first new moon after Matariki (the Pleiades) rose before dawn, usually around June–July. It has no continuous numbered year. Suppressed during colonization, the maramataka was revived from 1990 by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (the Māori Language Commission) using traditional month names rather than transliterated English ones, and remains in active use today.",
